Udwartana Therapy

Udwartana is a classical Ayurvedic therapy in which warm herbal powders (Churna) are massaged over the body with firm, upward strokes, worked against the direction of the hair follicles. It is a stimulating, invigorating treatment, the energetic opposite of a soothing oil massage, and is especially suited to Kapha-type imbalances: heaviness, sluggish metabolism, water retention, and stubborn fat deposits.

The friction of the medicated powders against the skin generates gentle heat, breaks down subcutaneous fat, opens the channels (Srotas), and stimulates lymphatic and circulatory flow. This makes Udwartana one of Ayurveda's most effective therapies for weight management, cellulite, sluggish metabolism, and dull or congested skin.

Clients often describe a feeling of lightness and warmth immediately after the session, with improved energy, smoother skin texture, and reduced heaviness over a course of treatment.

How is Udwartana done?

A precise, three-stage procedure built around the classical Udwartana technique.

Dosha Based Preparation

PREPARATION STAGE

Dosha Based Preparation

Your session begins with a brief assessment, after which the herbal powder blend is prepared and gently warmed. Depending on your dosha and skin type, your physician may select a purely dry powder (Ruksha Udwartana) or a powder blended with a small quantity of oil (Snigdha Udwartana) to protect sensitive skin.

Firm Upward Massage

Udwartana Application

Firm Upward Massage

The warm herbal powder is massaged over the whole body with firm, rhythmic strokes moving upward and against the direction of the hair follicles, typically for 30-45 minutes. Two therapists often work in synchrony, maintaining consistent pressure and pace so the friction stays even across the body.

Steam, Rest, Recover

POST-THERAPY CARE & RECOVERY

Steam, Rest, Recover

Residual powder is wiped away and, where appropriate, a short steam (Swedana) follows to deepen the effect. You then rest briefly before a warm shower, usually with green gram flour or a mild herbal cleanser rather than soap. A light, warm, Kapha-pacifying diet is advised for the rest of the day.

Frequently asked questions

How is Udwartana different from Abhyanga?
Abhyanga is an oil massage with flowing strokes that nourish and pacify Vata. Udwartana uses herbal powders and firm upward strokes to create friction, and is stimulating and reducing rather than nourishing. It is chosen for Kapha-type concerns like heaviness, sluggish metabolism, and excess fat.
Is it painful?
No. The strokes are firm and brisk, and the pressure is adjusted to your comfort and skin type. Most clients find it invigorating rather than uncomfortable.
Will it help me lose weight on its own?
Udwartana is a valuable support for weight management, but it works best as part of a plan that includes diet, movement, and lifestyle guidance. Your physician will advise on how it fits into your overall treatment.
Can it be done on sensitive skin?
Often, yes. In such cases, a Snigdha Udwartana, where the powder is bound with oil, is used to soften the friction. Your physician will assess your skin before deciding.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies by condition. Metabolic and weight-related concerns are usually addressed with a course of sessions over several weeks. Your physician will recommend a plan after consultation.
