Ayurvedic Treatment for Psoriasis

Do you experience dry, scaly, or inflamed patches on your skin that often itch or crack?

These symptoms might indicate Psoriasis, a chronic autoimmune skin condition that accelerates the life cycle of skin cells, causing them to build up rapidly on the surface. This leads to inflammation, redness, scaling, and discomfort.

While it is primarily viewed as an immune system dysfunction in conventional medicine, Ayurveda offers a deeper lens—one that considers the root imbalances in your body's internal systems.

But what are the underlying causes, and do they differ from person to person? Ayurveda approaches Psoriasis by understanding it as an imbalance of internal energies, especially when the body fails to eliminate toxins effectively.

Ayurvedic Perspective

Ayurvedic Perspective

Ayurveda classifies psoriasis under skin diseases (Kustha), specifically “Kitibha” or “Ekakustha” types.

It considers psoriasis to arise from imbalances of Vata and Kapha doshas, often along with some Pitta imbalance. Vata aggravation causes the skin to become dry and flaky, while Kapha imbalance leads to thickening and scaling. Pitta involvement adds heat and redness.

Crucially, Ayurveda attributes psoriasis to impaired digestion: poor Agni allows Ama (toxins) to accumulate and contaminate the blood (Rakta), which then manifests as skin lesions. In simple terms, “dirty blood” from undigested metabolic waste provokes all three doshas in the skin.

This explains why stress, diet, and seasonal changes can trigger or worsen psoriasis. Ayurvedic treatment therefore focuses on detoxifying the body and balancing the doshas (especially Vata-Pitta-Kapha) to promote clear, healthy skin.

Ayurvedic management focuses on restoring balance by pacifying aggravated doshas, particularly Pitta, and realigning the digestive system. This holistic approach includes:

Key Ayurvedic triggers and causes include:

  • Impaired digestion and Ama: A weak Agni allows toxins (Ama) to build up in deeper tissues and blood. This Ama disrupts doshas and directly irritates the skin.

  • Dosha imbalances: Excess Vata leads to dryness and cracking, and excess Kapha causes thick, oozing plaques. Pitta heat contributes to redness and burning.

  • Dietary factors: Eating incompatible or rich foods (e.g. too much fried, sour, or spicy food) can disturb digestion and Kapha. Alcohol and dairy excess are often implicated.

  • Lifestyle and stress: Night-owl habits, irregular routines, and chronic stress elevate Vata and Pitta, undermining skin health. For instance, lack of sleep and excessive daytime napping are noted triggers.

What & Why

  • A chronic autoimmune skin disorder that results in thick, scaly patches, inflammation, and redness.

  • Common causes include: immune dysfunction, genetic predisposition, stress, infections, certain medications, and environmental factors.
  • Primarily imbalance of all three
doshas, especially Vata and Kapha, along with the accumulation of
    Ama and disturbed Agni.
  • Various dietary, lifestyles and environmental triggers can trigger imbalance in all three doshas especially Vata and Kapha (as mentioned above) depending on individual body type including the conventional causes

Ayurveda Perspective

How

  • Symptomatic relief through topical corticosteroids and immunosuppressants.

  • Correct the root imbalances i.e. the aggravated Vata, Kapha, Rakta and disturbed Agni through diet, herbal medication, lifestyle changes, and Ayurvedic therapies like Vamana (enema) and Raktamokshana (blood-letting)
When to consult doctor

When to consult doctor

Consider Ayurvedic care when:

  • Skin lesions are widespread or persistent: If scaly patches cover multiple body areas and have lasted many months despite creams.

  • Conventional treatments fail or have side effects: If steroids or immune drugs aren’t controlling symptoms or cause adverse effects (thinning skin, etc.).

  • You want a natural approach: When you’re ready for a holistic plan that may improve digestion and immunity alongside skin.

  • Accompanying issues: If you also have joint pain, allergies, or digestive troubles (common in psoriasis), Ayurveda can address the whole system.

In Bangalore, Yuvrit’s Ayurveda specialists are experienced in treating stubborn skin conditions. Early Ayurvedic intervention can prevent psoriasis from worsening and improve quality of life.
