Ayurvedic Treatment for Sciatica

Do you often experience a sharp, shooting pain that travels from your lower back down the back of your leg?

You may be dealing with Sciatica, a painful condition caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the body. In Bangalore, where many people sit long hours or experience high stress, sciatica is common

Sciatica is not a disease by itself but a symptom of an underlying issue such as a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or muscle spasm. The pain can be intermittent or constant and is often accompanied by numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness in the affected leg.

But what causes this condition at a deeper level? And why does it affect some more severely than others? Ayurveda offers a more individualized, root-cause-based approach, focusing on the body’s internal imbalances and energy flow.

Ayurvedic Perspective

Ayurveda calls sciatica Gridhrasi, likening the limp of a vulture (gridhra) to the gait of someone with this condition.

It is classified under Vata Vyadhi (disorders due to aggravated Vata). The primary culprit is Vata dosha (especially Vyana Vata, which governs nerve impulses and muscle movement).

Aggravated Vata causes erratic nerve signaling, leading to shooting pain and numbness. Sometimes Kapha also contributes, causing heaviness and swelling around the nerve.

Ayurvedic texts emphasize that underlying weakness in the spine’s tissues and accumulation of Ama in the lumbar region allow Vata to lodge there, compressing the nerve. In sum, sciatica in Ayurveda is a sign of disturbed Vata energy in the lower body.

Common Ayurvedic triggers and causes include:

  • Dietary and metabolic factors: An irregular diet with cold, dry, or stale foods promotes Vata. Poor digestion can lead to Ama (toxins) that accumulate and irritate the nerve.

  • Physical strain or injury: Excessive lifting, trauma, long-distance travel, or over-exercise can sprain or strain the back, provoking Vata imbalance around the spine.

  • Sedentary lifestyle: Prolonged sitting or lack of movement weakens muscles and imbalances Vata in the lower back.

  • Environmental factors: Cold, wet weather or seasonal changes can trigger sciatica episodes by increasing Vata and Kapha in the joints and nervous tissue.

  • Psychological stress: Chronic stress elevates Vata in the nervous system, which can manifest as neurological pain.

Ayurvedic management focuses on restoring balance by pacifying aggravated doshas, particularly Pitta, and realigning the digestive system. This holistic approach includes:

Conventional vs Ayurveda Perspective

Conventional Perspective

Ayurveda Perspective

What & Why

  • Compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve causing pain radiating from the lower back to the legs.

  • Common causes include: Herniated disc, spinal stenosis or injury leading to nerve inflammation.
  • Primarily imbalance in Vata dosha, especially Vyana Vata that  disrupts the normal flow of nerve signals, leading to pain radiating from the lower back to the legs.
  • Various dietary, lifestyles and environmental triggers can trigger imbalance Vata dosha (as mentioned above) depending on individual body type including the conventional causes

Ayurveda Perspective

How

  • Symptomatic relief through NSAIDs, muscle relaxants, physical therapy or surgery in severe cases
  • Correct the root imbalances i.e. the aggravated Vata and disturbed Agni through diet, herbal medication, lifestyle changes, and Ayurvedic therapies like Basti (medicated enema).
When to consult doctor

When to consult doctor

See an Ayurvedic practitioner if:

  • Sciatic pain is ongoing: Pain lasting more than a few weeks or frequently recurring.

  • Mobility issues: You have trouble standing, walking, or sitting due to numbness or weakness.

  • You want to avoid surgery: Seeking natural alternatives or to complement physiotherapy.

  • Chronic Vata symptoms: If you also experience other Vata imbalance signs (like insomnia or constipation) alongside your back pain.

Early Ayurvedic intervention can often prevent sciatica from becoming chronic. At our Bangalore clinic, we guide you through the healing process step by step.
