Knee pain is a widespread issue that can stem from aging, overuse, past injuries, or inflammatory conditions like arthritis. It often begins subtly and worsens over time, limiting flexibility and ease of movement.
While many consider it a natural part of aging, chronic knee pain can signal deeper structural and systemic imbalances within the body. But what really causes this persistent discomfort, and why does it vary so much from person to person? Ayurveda offers a deeper perspective on these questions, focusing on the body's natural balance.

Ayurveda views knee pain primarily as a Vata imbalance issue. Vata dosha governs movement and joint lubrication, so when it is aggravated (by factors like cold or dryness), it causes the synovial fluid to dry up and joints to weaken.
This leads to symptoms of pain, cracking sounds, and stiffness. In cases of osteoarthritis (known as Sandhigata Vata), the aggravated Vata settles in the joints and erodes the cushioning Kapha tissues.
Ama (toxic byproducts of digestion) also plays a role: poor diet or digestion can allow Ama to accumulate and lodge in the knee, fueling inflammation (often seen in rheumatoid arthritis).
Overall, Ayurveda sees knee pain as a sign that Vata is too dry and rough for your joint health, often combined with weak digestion. The remedy is to pacify Vata with warmth and lubrication, while removing Ama so healing can occur.
