According to modern medicine, it is usually caused by viral or bacterial infections, leading to sore throat, pain, and difficulty swallowing. It is of three types- acute, chronic and recurrent. Acute tonsillitis is a sudden inflammation of tonsils. When the occurrence is persistent then it is considered as chronic tonsillitis. When the occurrence is frequent, it is termed as Recurrent tonsillitis. 

In Ayurveda, tonsillitis is said to be a type of Kantharoga (throat disorder). It is primarily associated with all Tridosha (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) imbalance leading to swelling, inflammation, and accumulation of Ama (toxins) in the throat region.

According to Ayurveda common symptoms of tonsillitis include:

  • Kapha accumulation from cold, heavy foods
